Homeowners & Dwelling
Home Insurance
A homeowners policy bundles several protections: the structure, your belongings, your liability to others, and your living expenses if a covered loss makes the home unlivable. In coastal Louisiana, the details matter: named-storm deductibles, wind coverage, and the fact that flood is a separate policy. We walk through each item so you know what is and isn't covered before hurricane season, not after.

Worth knowing in Louisiana
Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy, through the National Flood Insurance Program or private flood carriers, and typically has a 30-day waiting period before it takes effect. Louisiana policies also commonly carry a separate hurricane or named-storm deductible calculated as a percentage of your dwelling coverage.

What home insurance can include
Each item below is a distinct coverage with its own limit and, in some cases, deductible. Whether a specific loss is covered always depends on the terms of the policy you purchase.
- 01Dwelling coverage
- Pays to repair or rebuild the structure of your home after a covered loss such as fire or wind damage, up to the policy limit.
- 02Other structures
- Covers detached structures on your property (garages, sheds, fences), usually as a percentage of your dwelling limit.
- 03Personal property
- Covers your belongings (furniture, clothing, electronics) against covered perils, at home or, in many policies, anywhere in the world. High-value items like jewelry may need scheduled coverage.
- 04Personal liability
- Protects you if someone is injured on your property or you accidentally damage someone else's property, covering legal defense and judgments up to the policy limit.
- 05Loss of use / additional living expenses
- Pays for temporary housing and additional living costs if a covered loss makes your home uninhabitable during repairs.
- 06Flood insurance (separate policy)
- Covers flood damage to structure and contents. Not included in homeowners policies. Written separately through the NFIP or private flood carriers such as Wright Flood. Most policies have a 30-day waiting period.
