Does Bundling Home and Auto Insurance Make Sense?
By Beneficial Insurance Agency · Last reviewed September 21, 2026
"Bundle and save" is one of the most advertised phrases in insurance. The idea is real (most carriers offer a multi-policy discount when you place home and auto together), but whether it is the right move depends on your situation, not the slogan.
What bundling actually is
A multi-policy discount is a percentage a carrier takes off one or both policies when you hold more than one line with them. Carriers offer it because multi-line customers stay longer. The size of the discount varies by carrier and by state filing. It is not one universal number.
When bundling tends to help
- Both your home and auto risks fit the same carrier's appetite. The discount only matters if the carrier's base rates are competitive for both
- You value one renewal date, one billing relationship, and one claims contact
- Your home carrier also writes auto in Louisiana at reasonable rates
When it doesn't
In coastal Louisiana, the carrier with the best homeowners terms for your parish often doesn't write auto at all, or writes it uncompetitively. In that case, two separate carriers, each strong in its own line, can cost less in total than one bundle, even after the discount. A discount off an uncompetitive rate is still an uncompetitive rate.
How we evaluate it
As an independent agency we quote it both ways: bundled with each carrier that will write both lines, and split across the strongest carrier for each line. Then you compare real numbers. Sometimes the bundle wins, sometimes the split does. The answer is specific to your home, your vehicles, and your history, which is why we won't promise either outcome in advance.
If your renewal is coming up, send us the basics and we'll run the comparison for you.
